Critique Your Resume Against a Real Job Description

Claude (free tier) Verified March 23, 2026

Upload your resume PDF and a job description to Claude's free tier, get a specific critique of what's wrong with each section, then rewrite the weak parts yourself. The free tier gives you roughly 15–40 messages per rolling 5-hour window β€” enough for a full resume review session if you're deliberate about how you use it.

The walkthrough

What breaks

Claude's free tier runs on a rolling 5-hour window, not a daily reset at midnight. If you send a big message at 2 PM, you might not be able to send another until 7 PM. But if you send it at 8 PM, you can send more at 1 AM. The window resets continuously as messages fall out of the 5-hour range. Plan your session accordingly β€” do the heavy lifting (upload, critique, rewrites) in one sitting during off-peak hours (after 8 PM ET weekdays, or any time on weekends) when limits are more generous.

Claude also has a weekly cap on top of the 5-hour window. If you're doing a lot of job searching, spread your resume work across the week rather than cramming it all into one day.

Sometimes Claude will refuse to rewrite content it thinks is inappropriate or that might violate its usage policies. Its PDF reading isn't perfect either β€” if your resume has unusual formatting, columns, or graphics, the text might come through garbled. Always check that Claude read your resume correctly before acting on its feedback.

Claude can also hallucinate experience or skills you don't actually have. If it suggests adding "managed a team of 12" when you've never managed anyone, ignore that suggestion. The goal is better wording, not invented credentials.

Three things this guide teaches

The two-document prompt structure
Click to reveal β†’

Most people just paste their resume and ask "is this good?" That gets generic feedback. Asking Claude to compare your resume against a specific job description produces feedback that's actually actionable for that application. This works because Claude can hold both files in one conversation (up to 20 files, 500MB each).

Timing around the rolling 5-hour window

Claude's rolling 5-hour window means timing matters more than daily quotas. If you do your resume work at 3 PM on a Tuesday, you might get cut off mid-session. Do it at 9 PM or on a Saturday, and you'll have the full window to yourself. Off-peak hours (outside 8 AM–2 PM ET weekdays, all weekend) also get double the normal message limit.

The "one section at a time" technique

Asking for section-by-section rewrites conserves your message budget and produces better results. If you ask Claude to rewrite your entire resume at once, you burn through your quota on one message and get generic rewrites. Instead, identify the 2-3 weakest sections from the critique, then rewrite each one in a separate follow-up message. This uses 4-5 messages total instead of 1, but the rewrites are more targeted and you have budget left for clarifying questions.

Try it now

Open your most recent resume, find a job description you actually want to apply for, and run this workflow tonight. If it's a weekday, wait until after 8 PM ET when Claude's off-peak limits are more generous. If it's a weekend, you're good to go any time.
