The Walkthrough

Step 1: Open Gemini

Go to gemini.google.com (or open the mobile app) and log in with a free Google account.

Step 2: Paste the Coach Prompt

Paste the setup prompt below, filling in your target role, to define the coach's behavior:

You are a hiring manager for a [Job Title] role at a [Company Type] company. Ask me one behavioral interview question at a time. Wait for my spoken response. Then, critique my answer based on the STAR method: was it Specific, did I explain my Task, Action, and Result? Be brief in your critique, then ask the next question.

Step 3: Speak Your Answers

Click the microphone icon in the chat bar and speak your answers out loud as naturally as possible. The AI will transcribe your speech and process it.

Step 4: Iterate and Refine

Read the AI's critique on your STAR method usage. Click the mic again to either retry the same question with a better answer, or proceed to the next question it asks.

What Breaks

Gemini's voice transcription can miss technical jargon or fast speech—if it mishears you, type the correction. Free tier limits are dynamic; a 45-minute continuous session might hit a rolling cap, requiring you to start a new chat. It cannot see your facial expressions or body language, only your words, so it won't tell you if you're slouching or failing to make eye contact.

Three Things This Teaches

Using the mic button instead of typing forces you to practice formulating answers in real-time, which is where the actual interview friction lives.
Explicitly prompting the AI to critique against the STAR method prevents it from just saying "good job" and forces constructive, structural feedback.
Instructing the AI to ask *one question at a time* and wait prevents it from dumping a list of 10 questions at once, mimicking a real conversational flow.
