How many receipts do you need to scan per 3-hour session?

The Walkthrough

Step 1: Open ChatGPT

Go to chatgpt.com on your phone or computer and log in to a free account.

Step 2: Upload the Receipt Photo

Tap the paperclip/attachment icon next to the prompt box and upload a photo of your receipt from your camera roll or files.

Step 3: Paste the Extraction Prompt

Paste the template below into the text box and hit send:

Extract the item names and prices from this receipt. Format the output as a markdown table with columns: Item, Price. Add a final row for the Total.

Step 4: Copy to Spreadsheet

Copy the resulting markdown table from the AI response and paste it directly into your budget spreadsheet (Google Sheets or Excel will auto-format the columns).

What Breaks

You are limited to roughly 16 vision messages every 3 hours on the free tier. If the receipt is extremely faded or handwritten, it may hallucinate items or prices. Always check the AI's calculated Total against the receipt's printed total to catch OCR errors. It cannot read receipts that are entirely in a language it doesn't recognize without prompting it first.

Three Things This Teaches

Pasting a markdown table from ChatGPT directly into Google Sheets or Excel automatically formats it into columns, skipping manual tabbing.
Asking the AI to sum the prices and compare it to the printed total catches OCR errors before they break your budget math.
You can upload 3-4 receipt images in one prompt and ask for a single combined table, saving your rolling message quota.
